about

"Incomplete Translucent Apparitions of the Devil's Horn" stands as the latest and final compilation of 'band'-focused songs. This collection, featuring unreleased tracks and singles, serves as a time capsule for Pothole Skinny's early 2000s era with the collaboration of Frank Murphy, Scott Freyer, and Mark Dagley. Kicking off with "The Whaler" and "Sword of My Life," these tracks honor and pay homage to indigenous struggles. "The Whaler" artfully incorporates a voiceover from the 1980 PBS documentary "Umealit: The Whale Hunters," offering a provocative sonic journey into the world of Alaskan Indigenous people who hunted bowhead whales for survival. "Sword of My Life" carries the rhythmic percussion of reflection, delving into the story of the Jackson Whites community in Ringwood, NJ – a unique blend of Indigenous peoples, European settlers, and African Americans that has encountered historical and present-day challenges. "Washington Breakdown," a spirited cover of the Almanac Singers, playfully satirizes the political landscape and events preceding WWII, capturing the era's societal and political upheaval through the group's progressive lens. "Beneath the Frozen Pond," a haunting composition by Frank Murphy, leads listeners through introspective soundscapes, recorded live on air by Irene Trudel at WFMU on June 2, 2003. "In Observance of Old Scars," a poignant offering, originates from a split 7" with Two Dollar Guitar on Full Frame Records. Penned by Scott Freyer, this track delves into the realms of introspection and personal contemplation. The album's bookend is the Jandek cover "You Painted Your Teeth," first featured on "Down in a Mirror - A Second Tribute to Jandek," released by Summersteps Records.

While exploring synthesis and field recordings, Connolly returned to PS in 2023 with a solo approach, incorporating meditative guitar, tape loops, and minimal electronic elements. ... more
