A collection of live recordings pulled from MiniDV video cameras from 2003 - 2007. Toward the twilight of the Pothole Skinny "band" era, most performances were improvised. These improvised recordings are part of that era.
Track One:
This recording was more of an ensemble featuring Gabriel Walsh, Pat Gubler (P.G. Six), Mark Townsend, Stephen Connolly, Mark Dagley, Scott Freyer and Frank Murphy. This performance was part of an all day 'in the street' music fest that celebrated and protested the closing of the 111 First St. arts building which was a warehouse shared by industrial tenants and artists and became known as an arts center, with galleries, studios, residences, and lofts that housed over 200 artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, filmmakers, writers, and poets. The following year, in the spring of 2005, the artists and other tenants were evicted in a dispute with developer Lloyd Goldman and the building was demolished in 2007.
Track Two:
This was an improvised intro to a more song oriented performance. On the evening of Dec 12, 2003. We were invited to play by Lex Leonard, the founder of the Waterbug Hotel located at the corner of Christopher Columbus Drive and Barrow Street in Jersey City. Per Lex, as quoted in
jcitytimes.com, “Almost two decades ago, I founded the Waterbug Hotel, which was headquartered in this beautiful historic building. Someone who did research on this building discovered that it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. I wouldn’t doubt it since I recall finding a bricked up archway in the basement. Anyway, I ran this place for almost a decade, and I, along with a myriad others, called it home, an inspiration, an escape, an institute. It was a full-on intentional community of artists, musicians, and other interesting personages — truly worthy of being written about or at least mentioned in the annals of this small city’s history.” The building was destroyed by a fire in the early morning of April 7, 2022. This recording features Stephen Connolly, Mark Dagley, Scott Freyer and Frank Murphy.
Track Three:
This was part of an opening reception of "1:1/1 Lightning Rock" by New York artist Stephanie Camposat at the Abaton Garage, a gallery in Jersey City operated by Pothole Skinny member/artist Mark Dagley and playwright Lauri Bortz (More info on the gallery here:
